Riding on a new wave of old vibe
Kochi city has always been this hep and happening spot, everything new and experimental first has its water tested here in the city. Kochi’s ever evolving attitude towards anything new has always encouraged music to thrive in all its glory. With its traditional crowd that grew up with a potpourri of classical performances and rock music concerts to its present young and floating crowd that has Mother Jane and Thaikkudam Bridge surging through its veins Kochi has seen music genres of all kinds taking its turn here. Of late a slew of young music lovers have come forward to breathe life back into the indie music scene.
A series of successful indie music fests over the past few months stand as a true testament to the cities growing taste in music. Popular Music show Music Mojo had pulled off ‘Indie Gaga’ in March with an interesting line-up of artists and a massive crowd. With good music and alcohol to go with it the fest was touted as the new age ‘hippie fest’. Held on the plush lawns of Bolgatty Palace the fest was aimed at a reliving the past glory of indie music with a fresh take on it.
The Heart Session which has been successfully conducting intimate gigs for local indie artists since over a year organised a brand new session in March. Held at Pepper Fry studio it featured indie musicians from Kochi and Bengaluru and a poet as well. Chennai based popular gig organiser ‘House of T’ made their grand entrance in Kochi with an intimate gig organised at Zostel Kochi featuring indie artists from Kochi.
‘Alt Wave’ was another concert that took place in Kochi this month which saw an interesting lineup of artists from across the country with some strong political statements.
The upcoming indie fest to look out for in Kochi is the ‘Chenqal Music Fest’ organised by Art House18. Art House18 which has been organising intimate house concerts for the past few months are bringing together some quintessentially Kochi bands such as ‘AGO’, ‘The Derelicts!’, ‘Perfect Equation’ and ‘Amata’ along with Chennai based band ‘ Fish in the Sink’ on April 6 at Kakkanad.
